Soup's On! Broths and Stocks For the Fast Metabolism Diet

Who doesn't love a great-tasting soup on a chilly day? Soups, broths, and stocks are liquids, which makes them easier to digest and helps reduce bloating and keeping you regular. Making your own soups, broths and stocks are a real kitchen time-saver, and they're included in many soup recipes in the Fast Metabolism Diet book, and in the Fast Metabolism Diet Cookbook. However, it can be tricky to find brands that don't include corn, sugar, milk or soy ingredients. Here are some brands to look for.

As always, even if you purchase a product you've used before, take a moment to scan the ingredient list again. Manufacturers change their recipes frequently, and they're under no obligation to alert consumers of the change.

Try to buy organic broth whenever possible.

Stock vs. Broth

Theoretically, there's a difference. Both start out the same way: vegetables and/or meat scraps simmered slowly in water until the solids impart their flavor to the liquid. What results is stock. Broths typically include another step -- the addition of spices and seasonings. Both can be used in recipes for the Fast Metabolism Diet. It's a matter of taste and finding a brand you like. Some are fairly high in sodium, so be sure to taste before adding additional seasoning. Go for a low-sodium brand if you can.

You'd think that a brand's products wouldn't vary too much from flavor to flavor, but that's not what we found. For example, Trader Joe's Organic Free- Range Chicken Broth works perfectly for the FMD. However, the same brand's Organic Low-Sodium Chicken Broth and regular (non-organic) Free Range Chicken Broth contain cane juice (yep, that's sugar). So be sure to double check what you're buying.

In fact, sugar is the big reason lots of brands didn't make the cut. Those brands with sugar often have less than one gram of added sugar per one-cup serving, but those grams can add up. Keep in mind that even when a product containing sugar reports "0 grams" per serving on the label, there could still be .9 grams of sugar per serving. It's really better to avoid sugar entirely, and there are enough brands that don't contain sugar, cane juice, evaporated cane juice or corn syrup that you can easily avoid it.

We found the following brands that work for the Fast Metabolism Diet, with no corn, sugar or soy ingredients.
