10 Tips To Reducing Toxic Burden

Is Your Body Toxic? 10 Tips To Reducing Toxic Burden

Are you confused on what your current toxic load might be and how to begin reducing that amount? From fragranced cleaning products to pesticides found in our foods, we’re exposed to harmful toxins every day. The good news is that we have these amazing bodies that have the ability to detoxify. By nurturing those mechanisms of detoxification, we’re able to support the body with what it needs to thrive – not survive!

If you’re currently on my Cleanse, you may have been noticing more energy, a strengthened immune system, and the ability to push past weight-loss plateaus amongst other detoxing benefits. I’ve received many questions about additional ways to reduce toxic burden, and I’ve put together this mini-quiz for you to identify your current toxic load and further steps to take to support your body’s detoxification process.

What’s Your Toxic Burden?

  • Do keep your shoes on in the house?
  • Do you use fragranced dryer sheets or laundry detergent?
  • Do you use a fragranced air freshener or sweet-smelling wall plug-ins?
  • Do you consume conventional produce instead of organic?
  • Do you consume fast-food or packaged, fried food more than twice a week?
  • Do you consume less than ½ your body weight in ounces of water daily (i.e., if you weigh 150 pounds do you consume less than 75 oz. of water)?
  • Do you get less than 7-8 hours of sleep a night?
  • Do you get less than 15 minutes of natural sunlight on a daily basis?
  • Do you travel in airplanes often?
  • Do you work in a place that is not well ventilated (closed doors/windows or no windows)?
  • Do you have constant feelings of worry, anxiety, or shameful thoughts about yourself?

If you’ve answered “YES” to 5 or more of the following questions, you may want to consider making some changes. Exhaustion, fatigue, inflammation, allergies, and weight loss resistance can result from having too much toxic buildup.  Here are ten simple ways to reduce toxic overload.

Detox Your Environment.

  • Remove Shoes Before Entering the House. Leave shoes by the front door or make sure you have a mat to wipe everything off. Statistics show we’ve got tons of pesticides on the bottom of our shoes that are brought into the home.
  • Add Greenery. Put living plants in your house to exchange “dirty air” for “clean air.” The air we breathe is so important for our health and adding greenery makes for a clean internal and external environment. Spider plants are especially good at this!
  • Avoid Room Deodorizers, Potpourri, Dryer Sheets, Perfumed Laundry Detergents, and Fragranced Skin Care. The additive effect of fragranced items inhibits the efficiency of your metabolic pathways. Instead, open the windows and use non-fragrance, BPA-Free, Paraben-Free products. I love Dr. Jacquelin Fields’ non-toxic Sacred Skin. She’s provided insight on this topic in a recent post, Toxins and Your Skin.

Detox by Using Food

  • Use our Metabolism Cleanse! The Fast Metabolism Cleanse is my secret weapon to detox! I’ve created this targeted nutrition program for total body detox from the inside out. My clients swear by this, and I love using it to supercharge the body especially during this time of year of positive growth and change.
  • Eat Real Food and Choose Organic. Get back to basics and choose whole foods that you can identify from the earth, the sky, and the sea. Avoid things like tartrazine number 5 or dyed/colored foods. Organic is ideal when it comes to reducing toxic burden.
  • Drink Spring Water. Drink half of your body weight in ounces of spring water every day. That means if you weigh 150 pounds, that’s 75 oz. of water! This helps flush out excess waste in the body and shuttles nutrients into the cells helping you to achieve a fast metabolism.
  • Eat Specific Detoxifying Foods. Vegetables are number one when it comes to naturally supporting liver detox. I’m always pushing ways to add lots of vegetables to meals and snacks. We’ve got tons of recipe ideas like this delicious Garden Veggie Omelette for breakfast or Vegetable Curry for dinner. Citrus fruits, herbal teas, and turmeric are also excellent add-ins to support healthy detoxification.

Detox by Making Lifestyle Changes

  • Think Healthy and Happy. Thoughts and ideas can be toxic too. We’ve got to embrace and love our environment and bodies. Take time to practice stress-reducing techniques or to engage in an activity you love and enjoy. For me, riding my horse puts me in that “happy place,” but for you, it could be a restorative yoga class or singing in a church choir.
  • Slow Down and Enjoy Your Food. I want you to fall in love with food and ask yourself D.I.E.T. (Did I eat today?) Your body will thank you when you take the time to slow down and thoroughly appreciate your food.
  • Dry Skin Brushing. This is an easy way to encourage cell renewal, support the body’s lymphatic system, and flush away wastes and toxins.

Every day we can take little steps to alleviate some of this toxic overload. By supporting and nurturing your body’s natural detoxification systems, you’ll be healthier and more able to achieve a fast metabolism.
