Take Your Probiotics How?

For women, taking a daily probiotic supplement can help balance healthy bacteria in your intestinal and genital tracts. But there’s a quicker way to get relief from symptoms of yeast overgrowth.

All of our bodies are exposed to yeast, but when the body’s ecosystem isn't in the balance, excess yeast can manifest in the vagina, causing recurrent yeast infections or bacterial vaginitis.

Many take probiotic capsules orally, but using them as vaginal suppositories gets straight to the most affected part of the body, helping promote good bacteria in the vaginal flora and helping balance the body’s pH.

Vaginal probiotics: Health benefits

Lots of things can upset the natural balance of bacteria in your vagina. Pretty much anything that can affect your body’s pH level, or disrupt your immune system, can cause a bacterial imbalance in your vagina. Taking antibiotics, oral steroids, or birth control pills can be a factor. Cancer or cancer treatments, sexual activity (because a man’s sperm has a different pH level than your vagina), and pregnancy can also affect that normally happy bacterial balance.

If you’re experiencing a yeast infection (if you’ve never had one before, please see your doctor first), probiotics can help restore balance especially quickly when they are also used as daily suppositories; simply insert a capsule as far as you can and release.

Choosing a brand

Any brand of probiotic capsules can be used, but rotating brands every few months will help keep a good mix of probiotic strains.

Look for a brand that includes more than one strain of probiotic; Lactobacillus acidophilus is most common, but others include lactobacillus rhamnosus, reuteri, plantarum and/or salvarius.
