Why Getting Healthy Is Easier With the Right Support

In this episode, Haylie Pomroy is joined by Nancy Curtis, a certified Fast Metabolism Diet coach and longtime fitness and health educator, to explore why having the right support system can make all the difference in healing your metabolism.

Nancy shares her own journey from years in exercise science and personal training to healing 35 pounds of weight gain and chronic inflammation after multiple surgeries, and how becoming a Fast Metabolism coach allowed her to give other people the support she once needed herself.

Together, they discuss why community and consistency matter as much as any meal plan, how food variety supports the gut microbiome, and two simple daily habits that can start healing your metabolism right away.

Discover why getting healthy is rarely something you have to do alone, and how the right coach, community, and consistent nutrition can move you toward real, lasting results, here on Fast Metabolism Matters.

Edited Transcript:

Nancy Curtis: I really want to help people understand that they’re not alone in this and what they’re going through. They’re not crazy. It’s normal to feel disconnected. And I really want to help people understand that there are people that are going through this that can help you. There are people that sometimes you just need someone to listen.

Haylie Pomroy: Hey guys, it’s Haylie Pomroy here. I am your nutritionist. I’m also the number one New York Times bestselling author of The Fast Metabolism Diet. Hey, we just got published in another language. We are seven languages strong now. Another area that we’re super strong in is being huge advocates for you healing your metabolism, for you turning towards food, for putting power on your plate, and healing your body from the inside out.

Look guys, I can’t do this alone. And one of the biggest joys of my life is when I decided to create a coaching program. I knew that there were more of you out there that needed this kind of help than I could ever hope to provide. And so we dug in really deep and we put in, and I’m sorry, Nancy, I have one of our coaches with us today, she can tell you about it, but we created a very intense training and certification program so that individuals could be Fast Metabolism coaches and they could go out and they could be empowered with a tremendous amount of knowledge, skills, and tools so that they could help you.

Today I am super lucky. I have one of my most favorite coaches. We are horse girls together. All of you horse people out there will know exactly what I’m talking about. But to have Nancy Curtis, Nancy, thank you so much for being here today.

Nancy Curtis: Thank you. This is an honor. I’ve been so excited about this for the last two weeks now. Can you see how giddy I am?

Haylie Pomroy: For me too. Nancy and I have gotten to spend a lot of time together. You were just out at the ranch. We had a good coaching retreat and you brought us all incredible jerky, which was amazing. And I wanted you to be on the podcast because I wanted to introduce you to a lot of people kind of out there that are looking for someone that can help them get unstuck. We need positivity. We need feeling good. We need to have real results. And I think most importantly is we need to have real results that are going to change all of our lives. Not just the scale.

And so Nancy, again, thank you for being here, but can you kind of tell me a little bit about, I know you have a cool background, so I want everybody to hear about it, but can you tell me a little bit about why the Fast Metabolism, why you came into this community and why this seemed to be a good fit for you?

Nancy Curtis: I found the Fast Metabolism Diet nine-ish years ago. And my background before that was in exercise science. And I had always been in the fitness space, the wellness world. And the years that I was in college, it was a little bit of a different mindset. And we were kind of told, well, if you want to lose more weight, just work harder.

Haylie Pomroy: Just exercise more.

Nancy Curtis: You can do it. Just work hard.

Haylie Pomroy: Hit the gym. Hit the gym. Doesn’t matter what you eat.

Nancy Curtis: Just keep doing it. And that was not working for me.

And I wasn’t really where I wanted to be weight-wise. And no matter how much I worked out, it just wasn’t doing it for me. I had a lot of information on all the diets out there. And anyway, I stumbled across yours, and I started reading. And I just, well, actually, I listened, because I do audiobooks just about every day.

Haylie Pomroy: But you were doing training for like 20 years. You were a personal trainer for like 20 years.

Nancy Curtis: Yeah. Group fitness and personal training. And I’m also a phys ed and health teacher. And that’s my life. That’s my world. My bachelor’s is in exercise science. This is my thing.

Haylie Pomroy: I love it.

Nancy Curtis: And even with all of that knowledge, I just wasn’t where I wanted to be. And the plans out there did not match my values. Because I grew up on a farm, and I was very connected with food. And I knew how powerful food would be. And so many plans were about deprivation and punishment and guilt and all of these things. And I didn’t believe in it, even though that’s kind of what school had taught me. Deep down, I knew it wasn’t right.

Haylie Pomroy: Well, we don’t do it. We don’t do it on the farm. We don’t do it to our horses. We don’t do it…

Nancy Curtis: Never.

Haylie Pomroy: Yeah, no. In fact, if our horses aren’t running fast enough, or they don’t look shiny enough, I mean, we’ll send our hay off to be analyzed. Could you imagine if people said, “I’m not sleeping well, and my joints hurt, I’m going to send my dinner off to be analyzed to make sure I’m feeding myself really well for performance”? I mean, it’s in every other species. Our dogs are chewing their paws. And we’re like, what are you feeding them? Whereas, as humans, we’re stressed beyond belief. Our immune systems are a wreck. We have shingles or whatever else is going on. And we don’t even think to look at our food. It’s just crazy. You and I really resonated really fast on that. And I’m all about body and movement and the physiology of it all, especially post-injury. I had that really traumatic car accident that really made a difference.

So you kind of jumped in, you said, wait a minute, this makes sense. Of course I have an ag background. We were thinking about that, but you can’t separate yourself from food and food source. And we supplement our soil. Every time we grow a crop, we supplement our soil. We need to supplement our soil in order to grow our thoughts and our joints and our hair and our skin and our bones. We need to supplement our soil.

How did it kind of transpire then, did you just start reading books? When did you want to be a coach? Like, take me through that journey.

Nancy Curtis: For a few years, I was super into it; I did really, really well. And then life happens, and things come up, and some major injuries happen. And I just kind of, at the time, my body needed it the most, I honestly, I put nutrition to the side because I was kind of living just in survival mode. It was just day-to-day, time to get through. And I kept thinking, when I heal from this, I’ll get back on it. And then I get another injury. And then when I heal from this, then it was just several years of that. And my weight crept up. I felt like crap. It just… I knew that I needed to do something. It was a little over a year ago, and I joined your membership finally. And then it was last summer when you were doing a scholarship opportunity, and I had put in for that. And although I wasn’t the big winner, I did get a partial scholarship. I was excited because when you first announced the program a few years prior, I was like, I have to do this. I need to do this. This is like top on my list. And then everything going on in the world, it just got pushed to the side. And when they offered me the partial scholarship, I said, “This is it. It’s a sign. I’m going to take care of me.”

And then as soon as I figure this out and take care of me and get myself back to health, then I can help other people. And it has been an amazing few months. I think it was the end of August when I started, and it has just been an amazing journey.

Haylie Pomroy: That’s great. Are you through Level 1 certification?

Nancy Curtis: Yes.

Haylie Pomroy: You’re starting to see clients. That’s amazing. That’s really cool. Did you find, when you were going through it, and tell me about some of your struggles and some of your successes?

I always say when I was going through kind of the major health crises and every stuff pops up all the time, I would have died to have a coach. I mean, it was so hard for me to claw back out of the hole of my health. Like it was such a disaster. I would have died to have had a coach. And as soon as I could, I got one. And I use one all the time. And as a matter of fact, I was seeing a client in person. I had traveled to go see a client, and I called two of our coaches three times. I’m like, “Hey, I need your help. Hey, I need your help. I need your help.”

Tell me about kind of some of the things that you’ve gone through that you think other people out there might be struggling with right now.

Nancy Curtis: Well, when I first started FMD many years ago, one of the feelings that I noticed that I struggled with: I felt very alone. I hadn’t joined your community. I was kind of just going at it by myself. And I didn’t have a lot of people around me that were willing to jump in with me. Eventually, I got some friends to join in, but it was very lonely. And through all of the things I’ve been through in the last few years with major injuries and surgeries and all of this, I have found that without a community, you just can’t do it. Without somebody there. I don’t know how I would be where I am today without my friends and my family and all of these people. When I was in the coaching program, I knew that this is how I can help people. This is what I can do to give back to people because I could have used this so much over the last few years. You’ve got to have someone in your corner, and it doesn’t matter if it’s for nutrition or just someone to just listen to your day, about your day, but you’ve got to have somebody in your corner. And I can do that for somebody. It just, it makes my day. I want to help.

Haylie Pomroy: What kind of people are you finding you? In the beginning, in my career, it’s always interesting. And whenever I get kind of like, I always get clusters of things like a cluster of somebody with autoimmune or a cluster of somebody with injury or a cluster of fertility, I always wonder like, what’s going on with myself, what lessons am I needing to learn? Because we learn from each and every one of our clients, but are there certain things that really you go, “Oh, I’ve got a fix for that,” that you really feel excited about working with?

Nancy Curtis: Because I’ve had a lot of experience with traumatic injuries myself. I really want to help people understand that they’re not alone in this and what they’re going through. They’re not crazy. It’s normal to feel disconnected. And I really want to help people understand that there are people that are going through this that can help you. There are people that sometimes you just need someone to listen.

Haylie Pomroy: Hi, it’s Haylie Pomroy, your host. I’ve written six New York Times bestselling books on metabolic pathways. And my latest book, Toxic Overload, tells you exactly what to do when your body’s overburdened. If you go to hayliepomroy.com/book, for a limited time, you can download a digital copy of this book completely free. That’s hayliepomroy.com/book. Grab your free copy while supplies last. Now back to our show.

Well, you look amazing, and you radiate. And I want to talk about your tremendous weight loss, but before I do that, how do people get ahold of you so they can start coaching with you?

Nancy Curtis: Yeah, email is going to be the best way. I teach full time at a school, so I don’t have my phone on me much during the day at all. Email is your best bet. My email is fitcoachcurtis@gmail.com.

Haylie Pomroy: Will you just spell that for me really quick?

Nancy Curtis: Sure. F-I-T-C-O-A-C-H-C-U-R-T-I-S @gmail.com. Fit Coach Curtis.

Haylie Pomroy: Perfect. I love that. And so you guys, everybody out there, please don’t email Coach Curtis questions. I’m going to say this because people are going to really gravitate towards wanting to kind of connect with you. We have communities for that. Our coaches are on there all the time. We answer all kinds of questions. But do so; use her email to schedule an appointment.

Do you usually see people once? Do you do packages? Do you do any introductory type stuff? Tell me about your practice.

Nancy Curtis: I’m actually, right now, I’m doing, I’m calling it a… it’s a four-week class, but it’s actually Zoom calls, and it’s a small-group setting. We can kind of share ideas. We can share our victories and our challenges. And I’ve been doing… it’s one call per week, but we actually started with a call kind of to prep everybody in advance. So, and then we’ll do a follow-up call. It’s going to end up being six Zoom calls. And I’m going to be trying to do these about every six weeks; we’ll start a new class.

Haylie Pomroy: Oh, that’s exciting.

Nancy Curtis: And so people can get in on kind of just do it as a package, but I can also do individual calls if people want that personalized, that special time where we can just talk about labs or talk about whatever you want, if you don’t want to bring things up in a group setting, but they are going to be very small groups. I’m going to make sure that you get some time to talk about whatever it is you need.

Haylie Pomroy: That’s nice. We’ve been doing some small group work at the Institute, and it’s just been profound. I mean, and like you said, it’s so nice to not feel alone through that process. I think that’s amazing. I love that. I’m writing notes because I want to make sure our community knows that you’re doing that. There’s a lot of power in that. Are you guys going through grocery lists, through meal maps? Are you taking them through the Fast Metabolism Diet? Are you teaching them concepts about how to heal their metabolism? Things to do that can actually increase the rate of burn? Like, is that the type of things you do?

Nancy Curtis: I’ve been a school teacher for almost 20 years, so I like to plan ahead, and I have my lessons kind of preplanned. And so one session is to prep your grocery list and look at the app, and we go through all that. And then each session it progresses along. And so there’s definitely time to ask questions specific to blood sugar or thyroid issues or whatever it might be. The sessions are actually all preplanned. The teacher in me can’t help it.

Haylie Pomroy: It’s so good. So people need help. There are not many mechanisms in our society. I mean, go to the grocery store, go to a restaurant.

There are very few things that are supporting us in being healthy, period. Quite the opposite. If you eat, breathe, drink, or sleep, you’re constantly being bombarded with obesogens or things that disrupt the metabolism, that promote fat proliferation, that reduce your opportunity to burn fat for fuel and move the scale, period.

I mean, just, you look to the left, you look to the right, you talk to your girlfriends, and it’s just mind-boggling right now. And so people need help. And so that structure, I think, is so important in keeping people going forward in that trajectory. And I love your teaching style too. And we’ve talked about this kind of as a community where it’s solution-oriented. It’s not like this is what you’re doing wrong. This is: look, today, let’s wake up and let’s do these things because they’re going to be right for your body. And you’ve had some tremendous success. Will you share with your community out here about some of your successes?

Nancy Curtis: Absolutely. Of course I had done this over the years, but I had slacked off the last few years, and with injuries and surgeries, I had actually gained about 35 pounds in less than four years. And I’m not very tall. It was a lot. I didn’t feel good. I was, I had inflammation. I was achy. I just didn’t feel good.

Haylie Pomroy: It’s a lot of stress on the body. On an already stressed body.

Nancy Curtis: And I mean, I had eight surgeries in six years.

Haylie Pomroy: Oh my gosh.

Nancy Curtis: And all but one was orthopedic, and it was major. I mean, broken femur, broken arms, broken everything. And it’s a lot for the body to go through. And I had, again, when my body needed nutrition the most, I put that to the side because mentally I had a head injury, so much stuff going on.

Haylie Pomroy: I’m going to just interrupt you for a second. When I had a brain injury, that’s when I got a coach. I actually did because I had really jumped into food as medicine as I was healing through my autoimmune disorder. And then I got in this massive car accident and had several surgeries. And I was cognizant enough, or aware enough, to know that I don’t know if I’m going to survive this or at least come back from this if I don’t have somebody help me. I was casted with the body cast, with my arm out with a bar. And then I was for nine weeks, and then eight weeks casted with my arm to my torso. They brought in a nurse to help me because I couldn’t; I’m right-handed, and I had a kid, a son at the time, not kids yet. And I thought, oh my gosh, to do basic things like brush my teeth and brush my hair. And I remember thinking, okay, but who’s going to help me maintain my nutrition? Like, who’s going to keep my autoimmune in check? And that’s when I first started using a coach.

I mean, I always tell you guys I have ever since. It’s been, I don’t know that I would have ever definitely not ridden horses again, and definitely not to the level of competition that I did, if I hadn’t used a coach. That’s why I always tell you guys, get out there. There’s people that need you. There’s people that need you.

I’m sorry, I interrupted you. You were telling me about getting through the surgeries, and then you circled back around to your nutrition and how did that happen, and what was the result?

Nancy Curtis: Last summer, like I said, when I knew I needed to make a change and I just kept saying, I’m going to start whenever. I’d set a date and not do it. And then when I got offered the partial scholarship, I said, I’ve got to do this. This is my sign. And I said, I’m taking charge. I also had to fit into a bridesmaid’s dress.

Haylie Pomroy: Isn’t that always a nice motivation?

Nancy Curtis: That was a little bit of motivation. I started, actually, I did a bunch of different plans, and I kind of mixed it up because I felt like that’s what I needed. And so between, I’d say, the end of August and the end of October, I kind of off and on, I lost… well, actually, between the end of August and now I’m down 22 pounds.

Haylie Pomroy: Great. Look at your body.

Nancy Curtis: I know when I feel so much better, I have so much more energy.

Now the biggest non-scale victory, a horse girl would understand this. I fit back into my boots.

Haylie Pomroy: Nice. Oh my gosh. It’s so funny. Whenever I gain weight, I gain in my calves. And people go, “Oh no, it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter. You look cute in high heels.” I go, but I can’t fit into my boots. Oh wow.

Nancy Curtis: I had so many leg, ankle, and foot injuries that all my inflammation was down there. It was about three weeks into FMD; I actually tried on a pair of my riding boots that I hadn’t put on in five years. And it slipped; my foot slipped right in. I said, “Oh my word.” Well, I just think I still have money because I don’t need to buy more. That was so important. I’m sure you understand the riding boot issue.

Haylie Pomroy: Yes. Hey, when I got in my car accident, my really good friend that was a horse trainer, he said, “Look, I’m going to take your horse. And if you ride again…” because they said I wouldn’t. “If you ride again, you don’t owe me anything. And if you don’t, you’re going to pay me for all the training, and we’ll sell the horse.” And I was like, hmm, that was a great motivation for me, for sure.

But so, Nancy, when you talk about doing a variety of plans, part of the coaching and certification, and I know it’s intense, and people have really kind of actually given me a hard time about that. They’re like, you can sell us a session on a couple of concepts and run with it. And I’m like, no, no, no. There are bodies in need, and bodies in need need power on your plate. They need knowledge. They need tools. They need skill sets. When you talk about, you went on a bunch of different plans in our healing, the metabolism umbrella. We talk about cleansing and detox, pain and inflammation. We talk about hormones. We have plans that are associated with gut and digestion: the Fast Metabolism Diet, which helps to rev up your rate of burn, Metabolism Revolution, which helps heal the structure. Bone, bone marrow, collagen, elastin, but also the structure of how the adipocyte, or the fat cell, stores and releases energy. I have to ask you, like, what is your… I want either your favorite plan or your favorite recipe. My plans always, like, I always jump around; sometimes I’m on, like, I’m on a big I-Burn kick when I get off the plane. I always do the I-Burn tea. I love the G-Burn soup. I’m a big 10-day cleanse woman because I have genetic predispositions that don’t help me detoxify quickly. What about you? What are some of your favorites?

Haylie Pomroy: Hi, it’s Haylie Pomroy, your host. When I was going through my health crisis, the worst part of it was feeling lost and alone, and I decided that I didn’t want anybody else to feel as desperate as I did. That’s why we set up a private membership group where you can come in, ask questions, get support, be connected with people that can actually help you on your health journey. If you go to hayliepomroy.com/member, you can join me for 30 days for free. I’ll see you there. We can jump in, and we can start to organize the path for your wellness. That’s hayliepomroy.com/member. I will see you there. Now, back to our show.

Nancy Curtis: Okay, so for plans, I love FMD because I’ve done it enough that it’s second nature to me. And it has enough variety that you don’t get fatigued.

Haylie Pomroy: And delicious food.

Nancy Curtis: And the food’s great. And I mean, it’s actually encouraged me to cook a lot more than I used to. That’s always good. FMD is like the staple. If I want to do something a little more targeted, personally, I like a 5-day cleanse.

10 days is a lot for me. But a 5-day cleanse, it’s something that I need. But you don’t have to do that much prep work for. It’s Monday to Friday, and you’re done. And it’s so simple. Actually, today is day one of a 5-day cleanse for me.

Haylie Pomroy: I would have started with you.

Nancy Curtis: And for recipes, I was like, I bet she’s going to ask me. There are two. The first one is your coconut curry chicken, which I think I make every single Phase 3 because it is my best, and I could eat it over and over again, which I know I shouldn’t.

Haylie Pomroy: No, if you come to my house, it’s always in the freezer. Like, whenever I’m making something, I go, “And coconut curry chicken.” If I’m cooking, I have a crock pot of coconut curry chicken. And then I just package it up, put it in my freezer. I send it to my mom’s house because she loves it. That’s funny. That’s a staple in my house.

Nancy Curtis: Yes. That’s number one. And then number two is going to be your jerky recipe because it is so hard to find jerky that is sugar-free and doesn’t have additives and all that, and make your own. So simple. And actually, I think it tastes better than the stuff in the store. Those are my two.

Haylie Pomroy: Well, I called it your jerky recipe. You brought it for us to the retreat, and it was so good. So, Nancy, what I want to do is get people easy access to you. Just give me your email one more time.

Nancy Curtis: fitcoachcurtis@gmail.com

Haylie Pomroy: Great. And if anybody’s out there right now and you’re struggling and you need to heal your metabolism, your metabolism is shot. It’s slow. It’s sluggish. Look at a salad and you gain weight. A margarita falls into your mouth, and you gain three pounds. I don’t know if any of that sounds like you; if you’re like for me, it’s a big metabolism. Non-scale victory is hair growth in the right places. On the top of your head and not on your chin, and feeling vitalized when you wake up.

What would be two tips? I’m going to let you leave everybody with two tips that you love to tell your clients to start healing their metabolism. If they could only do two things today, what would you tell them to do?

Nancy Curtis: Number one, get more sleep. And this is something that I personally need to do more of. But I really think that variety in your food is so absolutely critical because we get in food ruts, and every single Zoom call that I’ve had with my clients lately, I said, “Variety. Variety. Variety,” because I understand a food rut, and it is horrible for the body. We need desperately to get variety in our diets.

Haylie Pomroy: I love that. And I’m going to just punctuate that a little bit. Recent studies have shown that by changing the food, you can completely heal your gut microbiome because there’s a challenge that occurs with biodiversity of food in secreting of enzymes and the growth and culture of good, healthy gut bugs.

A lot of people with a Fast Metabolism Diet, we call it confuse it to lose it, where you’re rotating foods and macro and micronutrients in order to stimulate different rest and burn cycles in the body. But there is also this tremendous healing in the digestive system and then the gut microbiome, which can absolutely affect inflammation, brain memory, cognition, pain, joint health, collagen, elastin, anti-aging. I mean, the list just goes on. I love those two tips: get rest and variety in your food.

Having a coach helps you learn the tools and make variety easy. I think so many times we’re stuck because we just don’t know those little tips that can kind of unlock it.

Nancy, thank you so much for being here. I know that there are tons of people out there just waiting to kind of get your help. I really appreciate it. I am super thrilled about the small group classes that you’re offering. I really am glad. I want to make sure we share that with our community. Thank you for being on here. I love having you as a colleague. I mean, we definitely have a lot of similarities in our backgrounds and love of agriculture and horses. But I also really appreciate your passion for those that you’re helping. And I needed the help helping people. And so I just want to thank you.

Nancy Curtis: Thank you so much for the opportunity to not only do this today, but to let me become a coach, because it’s been a dream of mine. And it makes me so happy. Can I tell you one success that I had a client tell me this morning?

Haylie Pomroy: Please.

Nancy Curtis: Two weeks into FMD. And she messaged me this morning. And she said, I can’t believe it. I got up this morning. And her blood sugars were under 100 for the first time in like forever. She’s like, they were 87, not even like just under 100, or 87. And she’s down almost 10 pounds in two weeks. And I said, I have to tell everybody because I almost want to like, here’s a story. It’s just this is why we do this. This is why we do this. And it fills my heart.

Haylie Pomroy: I’m going to punctuate this; I’m going to punctuate this one on you. Good job, amazing job. And just what you’ve changed helped her change in her body. And doing it with food is sustainable. And also doing with food, and there are no side effects. We are definitely she’s done this in two weeks, and she’s definitely in a healthier place. If she had done it with medication, bringing the blood sugar down can help prevent maybe some collateral damage, but she’s not in a healthier place. And if we can do that, it’s our charge to do that. And we’re going to get out; we’re going to spread the word. And we’re going to keep doing that. And she’s going to be such a huge advocate for you when you start to change the chemistry and the numbers start to move. And you see things with chronic disease where they say it’s not possible. Diabetes is a disorder of the metabolism. And if you can work to heal the metabolism, you can heal just about everything.

Congratulations, what a great way to kick off your morning. And so I just like, I mean, when you’re there in it with the struggles and people are stuck, it makes it so worth it when you get them out of it. When you have a big one like that, it’s just worth a huge celebration. Thank you for sharing that with us. That was awesome.
