Shop, But Don't Drop
Giving is better than getting, right? So bring on the holiday shopping. I have friends and clients that make epic shopping trips from 7:00 a.m. until dark, hitting all the sales. Don’t forget to fuel up before and during an all-day outing.
Plan your meal times
The best holiday sale shoppers are master strategists, plotting out which stores to visit in which order. Even if your plan for the day isn't quite that detailed, you should still check out lunch menus beforehand and plan where -- and when -- you're going to eat. That way you can stay on track with your meal plan for the day, and if you're doing the FMD, you won't have to stress about where to find something that fits your phase of the Fast Metabolism Diet.
Bring snacks
Pack a Crash Stash on long shopping trips, just like you would when you travel. These quick, ready-to-eat snacks help keep your blood sugar steady and your energy high -- and they're just the thing to keep all those candy bars along the checkout line from calling your name. Here are some Crash Stash ideas for every phase of the Fast Metabolism Diet:
Phase 1: Fruits like oranges, pears, apples, tangerines, and Asian pears all travel well. Figs and peaches can make the trip too if you're careful with them.
Phase 2: Nitrite- and nitrate-free jerky, or thin slices of meat wrapped in lettuce.
Phase 3: A handful of nuts make a great portable snack. Add some slices of veggies like celery, carrots, green beans, bell peppers or jicama, or pair the veggies with hummus instead of nuts.
Stay hydrated
Whether you're waiting in line for a store to open or high-tailing it from one hot deal to the next, bring a water bottle to help keep yourself hydrated. Add a twist of lemon or a sprig of mint to make it more interesting or, if it's cold out, bring a thermos of hot herbal tea so you can stay hydrated and warm.
Staying hydrated not only keeps your energy up, but it also helps your body keep burning stored fat as energy while you shop. That's the best kind of multi-tasking!
Have fun
Hitting all the big sales can be serious business, but remember: Nothing stops your metabolism in its tracks like stress. So try to be realistic when you plan your shopping outings (and meal times). Set yourself up for a fun and carefree day that's so enjoyable; it sets your metabolism on fire.
