Read Your Labels, Video, and Homemade Tartar Sauce
I always say, “If it’s fake, take a break,” and that especially applies to packaged, processed “diet foods.” Convenience is great, but there are much better ways to get a quick meal or snack. If it says “free,” don’t buy it. That little word “free” is a potent marketing tool. You should be aware that the majority of products that say they are “free” of something have some kind of artificial sweetener or addictive flavoring component added that will make your body crave these products.
It’s buyer beware. Turn the package around and read the label!
Tonight I was excited to make a little quick tartar sauce. Just a little avocado mayonnaise, some lemon, some salt and pepper, and I chop up dill pickles with a little bit of dill seasoning.
But I wanted to give you a quick kitchen tip: Read your labels. This is one of my favorite mayonnaises, it’s this Avocado mayonnaise, and if you look at the ingredients, they’re perfect for either the H-Burn or Phase 3 of the Fast Metabolism Diet or the Cleanse. However I wasn’t paying attention, and I grabbed a large bottle of their Classic Mayonnaise versus what I love, their Avocado Oil Mayonnaise, and this one has sugar in it. Cane sugar! So this is going back to the store. Manufacturers will change things, people will decide to add different ingredients, so I just wanted to remind you all to read your labels.Looking for a convenient way to keep everything “Fast Metabolism Diet” at your fingertips? Homemade Tarter Sauce
Phase 3 | Makes about 1 cup
Prep time: 10 minutes | Total time: 10 minutes
INGREDIENTS
1 large egg
1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice, divided
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard, divided
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
3/4 cup grapeseed or olive oil (or a combination)
1/4 cup minced no-sugar-added dill pickle (such as Whole Foods kosher dills)
3 tablespoons minced green onion
1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley
1/2 teaspoon dried tarragon
1/4 teaspoon hot pepper sauce
DIRECTIONS
- In a blender or food processor, blend the egg, 1 tablespoon lemon juice, 1 teaspoon mustard, and salt until smooth.
- With the motor running, drizzle in the oil in a very slow stream until the mayonnaise is thick.
- Transfer the mayonnaise to a bowl and stir in the 2 teaspoons of lemon juice, remaining 1 teaspoon mustard, and all remaining ingredients.
- This tartar sauce will keep in the fridge for up to 1 week.
Cooked variation:
- First whisk the egg and 1 tablespoon lemon juice in a small saucepan over low heat until frothy and thick enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 5 minutes.
- Immediately transfer the mixture to a bowl, cover, and refrigerate.
- When the egg mixture has cooled to room temperature, blend it in the blender with the mustard and salt and add the oil slowly (as above).
