Fresh Produce Tips
We've all been there: Those beautiful tomatoes, those luscious strawberries, that crisp lettuce gets wilted, old, even slimy before you get a chance to eat it. What a waste! To avoid losing your produce, here are some of my favorite tips:
-
When you store your salad greens and fresh herbs, put a small amount of air in your sealed bag along with a paper towel to absorb moisture.
-
All veggies and fruits last longer if you keep the stems on. that goes for apples, avocados, carrots, beets, radishes, and tomatoes. When choosing your produce, look for veggies and fruits with the stems or greenery attached for maximum storage time.
-
Not all veggies and fruits go in the refrigerator. Leave tomatoes, bananas, unripe peaches and pears, and avocados on the counter (but away from the heat of the stove). Baskets and bowls are nice for holding these.
-
Potatoes and onions will last longer if you keep them in a cool, dark place, such as in a wire or mesh basket or bag in a cabinet. Store them apart, however, as they both release compounds that can cause the other to rot faster.
I hope you enjoy these tips as you're working in your kitchen. Keep an eye out for even more kitchen tips and tricks from me as you eat your way to health and a faster metabolism!
