How do I know my metabolism is fixed?

One of the big questions, if you’re doing the Fast Metabolism Diet, is: “How can I tell if my metabolism is fixed?” Once you hit your goal weight, are you “done”?

When my clients get close to hitting their goal weight, they inevitably want to know what happens next. They’ve embarked on a journey to heal their broken metabolisms, correct hormonal imbalances and make peace with food, but how does the journey end?

I like to reply with an analogy. Let’s say you’ve been working with a personal trainer for six months to get killer abs. You did thousands of crunches, modified your diet, built your core strength, and hurray! You’ve got the six-pack you’ve always wanted. Now does your trainer say “Good job! Now that you have fabulous abs, you’ll have them forever!” Of course not. If you plan on keeping that rock-hard gut, you’re going to have to maintain it, keep your weight in check, keep up with your strength exercises. Go back to eating ice cream on the couch and that six pack will turn into a pony keg.

It’s the same with metabolic repair. The Fast Metabolism Diet can get your fat-burning fire roaring, but you’re going to have to keep fueling the flames. If your metabolism is running fast and hot, it won’t take much fuel to keep the flames high. But if your metabolic fire isn’t quite there, it won’t be able yet to keep up. What are the signs that you’re not there yet?

It’s easier to gain weight than lose weight.

I’ll use the fire analogy again here — when your metabolism is running fast and hot, it will burn through whatever you throw on it — all that healthy, clean food plus cheesecake now and then, or a margarita here and there. But if your fire isn’t yet high and hot, it has a hard time keeping up. Throw too many wet logs on it and what happens? The fire weakens.

When your metabolism is in harmony, and you continue to mainly eat clean, you won’t gain weight or lose weight — you’ll be in a state of balance. But if your metabolism isn’t yet repaired, you’ll find it much easier to gain and harder to lose.

If you take the weekend “off” and start Monday 5 pounds heavier, your metabolism is not supported well.

It’s the same sort of situation here. If you’ve got a strong metabolism, it will be able to handle a birthday or wedding weekend. But if you jump on the scale Monday morning and find 5 or more extra pounds, your metabolism is out of balance.

Eat well, be well

Our bodies aren’t stagnant: They’re in a constant state of change. That’s why the Fast Metabolism Diet is a lifestyle. It takes focus to get there, but if you hope to stay healthy, you’ll need to incorporate what you’ve learned into your full-time life.

  • Always eat within 30 minutes of waking
  • Keep stress levels under control
  • Drink your water — half your body weight, in ounces, every day
  • Eat your snacks and don’t skip meals
  • Incorporate lots of fruits and veggies every day

A fast metabolism needs fuel and constant support that points you in a healthy direction. Do you have to be perfect? No way! One of the joys of maintaining that metabolic balance is being able to splurge without stress or guilt.

So listen to your body. Focus on getting that metabolism roaring. Then relax and live your new life, with all the knowledge you’ve gained and fully let go of all the weight you have lost.
