How to boost your Metabolism with Meditation. You will love my Orange Pine Nut Salad with Avocado
Meditation is an ancient practice with super contemporary benefits. It can do great things for your blood pressure, your heart rate, and especially your relaxation response, quelling the release of destructive stress hormones. The regular practice of meditation will also help your brain work better - and I bet we can all use a little of that!
Mindfulness meditation is a technique for focusing on an object, to train the mind to observe the present movement neutrally, without reactivity and an automatic stress response. Here’s how to do it.
What you need:
- Nothing but a quiet place to sit comfortably
- Optional: a cool, comfy meditation cushion or meditation bench
- Optional: a cool app for your phone that times your meditation and rings soothing chimes or gongs to alert you when to start or finish (search for “meditation apps)
Step by Step
- Sit quietly with your back straight. Don’t lean against anything unless you must to be comfortable. Cross your legs, fold them under you, or sit in a chair with both feet flat on the ground. Set a timer for five minutes for your first try.
- Take a few quiet calming breaths. Focus on how that feels. Notice the feel of the breath coming in and going out. Examine the sensations in as much detail as you can. If your mind wanders, bring it back to noticing the sensation of breathing as soon as you notice it has strayed.
- After you’ve done this for a while and you feel like you want to focus on something else, focus on how your whole body feels. Turn your attention to this sensation, but do not attach any opinion or reaction to it. Just observe, as if it were happening to someone else. Stay with this until your time is up.
- When the timer goes off, take a few deep, calming breaths, get up slowly, and move on through your day.
With a calm, non-reactive mind from meditation and this mood-boosting Orange Pine Nut Salad, you can help tackle stress, hormonal mood swings and any bad day that heads your way. The power is on your plate!
