Bring Your Body To Balance (pH)
I want to talk about bringing your body to balance. How to test your pH and what it can tell you about what to eat and when to eat it. We are going to talk about how to test your pH level. It's acidity versus alkalinity. It's a very delicate balance. The blood pH or the ecosystem of the blood must stay stable. It has a very small window. It can only be between 7.35 and 7.45. What the pH is, it's the way to tell if the body is acidic or alkaline.
Acidic things are like lemon. Alkaline things are like ocean water to give us an example of what we are looking at with acid and alkaline. Our blood can fluctuate very little. Seven is considered neutral. Anything lower than seven is considered acidic. Anything higher than seven is considered alkaline. Our blood is just slightly alkaline. If it varies at all with the outside of that very little window, it can be extremely dangerous. What our body does to keep a stable blood environment is that it uses the other aspects of the other excretions in our body to buffer that pH. It manipulates minerals or the way the body breaks down proteins. It stimulates or slows down enzyme production to keep that blood pH stable.
We look at different areas of the body that indicate to us how the body is keeping that equilibrium or that ecosystem stable. Again, the blood is going to always stay stable or we have major health issues. When we talk about pH, we are talking about the urine and the saliva specifically for testing purposes. The body also uses things like tears and sweat. Our breath helps stabilize the pH of the blood. All those other things are variables that can be adapted and changed to keep that precious level in the blood stable.
When we talk about testing the pH for our purposes, we are going to test this saliva pH and urine pH. We test this so that we know how the body is adapting. What enzymes in the body using or not using? Is the body inflamed? With acidity, we get a lot of inflammation in the body. Is the body using certain organ systems and functions to buffer efficiently or not? We look at this and it can help us know if we are getting the right nutrients to stabilize or keep that equilibrium stable. Is our body having to move things way out of balance to protect the blood? Again, we are going to test the saliva and urine.
I want to go over exactly how to test this. What does it mean to you in adjusting your food? What does your body is trying to tell you or tell us? The first thing we are going to do is talk about saliva pH. A lot of times, I have my clients test the saliva pH right when they get up in the morning. You want to make sure that you do this before you eat anything or before you brush your teeth. If you are on the fast metabolism diet, that's going to happen before your first meal within that 30 minutes of waking up. I don't want you to put these strips in your mouth. You spit on the strips or you can spit in a cup and put the strip in it. It's an Atrazine strip, so you don't want to put it directly in your mouth. I want to make sure we all got that.
What you want to do is, you want to make sure that you test that again before you eat. You want to test that before you drink anything even water. What we are looking for is just slightly acidic, about a 6.8. A lot of times, once we eat and or we brush our teeth, depending on what we are brushing our teeth with, can change the pH. Also, once we eat, we start to produce a lot of enzymes, salivary enzymes. The product gland starts to produce enzymes. That also can alter the pH. We want to find out what the pH is of the saliva first thing in the morning.
The urine pH testing is a little bit different. What I would like to tell my clients to do in the beginning is to chart this. If you are creating your seven-day meal map, on the notes side, mark, "My first-morning saliva pH is." With the urine pH, we test it after the first-morning void. If you want to test your first morning void or the first time you go to the bathroom when you wake up in the morning, you are going to test it in. It might be acidic. That's not abnormal. We will talk about why. Usually, in your second-morning void, once you've got up and moved around a little bit, the body should stabilize. We want that to be about 6.8, slightly acidic but not real low like a 5.5 or a 6.0. In the pH kit that we gave you, you will either spit or urinate on it. You will see you will be able to match it with the color and it will tell you exactly what the number is. Again, the first-morning void, you haven't got that, moved around and your body hasn't become active. We will talk about why it's usually a little more on the acidic side. I want you to do your second warning void. Our goal is for it to be about a 6.8.
You think about the fact that the blood has to stay just slightly alkaline to promote health. We think about this as a balance. It's natural to think that the saliva and urine will be just slightly acidic. A lot of times, I tell my clients, "Don't sweat. Don't worry about it. Don't stress about it." For the first week, let's just chart that. Let's find out what that first-morning saliva is. Let's find out what that second void of urine pH is then let's see what it's telling us about our body. Let's say, for example, you do your urine and your saliva pH. Both of those are very acidic. They are both under a 6.5. I have seen urine pH that is as low as a 4, saliva pH that is as low as a 5.5 or a 5, what does that mean? What is it telling us in our body? Why is our body creating such an imbalance in the ecosystem just to keep that blood stable?
We are looking for three patterns where they are going to get perfect, which is 6.8 saliva, 6.8 urine or we are going to get three variations of being out of balance, either the saliva and the urine or both acidic. The saliva is acidic. The urine is alkaline or both the saliva and urine are alkaline. What are those things mean? How do we use food to address those? Let's talk about the first one. Let's say that the saliva is acidic and the urine is acidic. What does that tell us as a whole in the body? What does it mean that we need to do? You are going to read a lot online. You are going to walk into the health food store, and they are going to say, "Buffered pH to help with alkalinity." Again, our blood doesn't vary. We are working to try and support all of the other fluids in our body to create an ecosystem that doesn't have to go out of balance to protect that blood. If we look at acidic and acidic, it tells us that we are not getting enough alkaline vegetables, so you need to make sure that you add more vegetables to your diet.
The other thing that I have a lot of my clients do when we have acidic-acidic is they add lemon to their water. I know a lot of you might be going, "Lemons are very acidic by nature." What happens when you ingest lemons? Make sure that you don't have any upper GI, stress, that your body would be irritated by it. Always listen to your body. It always knows best. When you ingest lemons specifically, they tend to stimulate alkaline ash for the pancreas. That helps your body buffer your pH more efficiently. We are going to add lots of vegetables. We are going to add lemon to our water. Make a lemon sorbet.
A different thing I want you to think about is, what exercises are you doing? When we have acidic-acidic, we want to look at deep breathing exercises. When the body is very acidic, it's not receiving enough oxygen. Deep breathing, yoga and stretching, are all imperative when your body, tissues and excretions are in an acidic state. By delivering more oxygen, helps or allows the body to stabilize the pH. Parsley is also very alkalinizing. It contains a ton of potassium. Cucumbers are very alkalinizing. They have a lot of potassium naturally in them. You want to make sure that you are chopping cucumbers. You are adding a lot of parsley to your diet. Those are things that you would want to do to support that.
Parsley is also a very good digestive aid. It helps stimulate the parotid glands to produce more alkaline enzymes, which is going to help elevate the pH of your saliva. Both acid or alkaline saliva not only destroys the enamel but can also degenerate the gums. Typically, when people have an acidic pH of the saliva, they find more sensitivity in the teeth, have heartburn and more upper GI distress. On the contrary, when the saliva is more alkaline, we find people that are prone to canker sores and people that have receding gums. It's very important if you have receding gums to look at your saliva pH or total body Ph.
Back in those days that you test acidic-acidic, things that I want you to think about those days is, "I'm acidic. I need to get a lot more veggies in, cucumbers, parsley, make sure I get my deep breathing exercises and my stretching." Even if you are on Phase 2, when you are doing weight-bearing exercise, stop afterward and do 15 to 20 deep breaths. Add lemon to your water and know that you need to make sure that you are intentionally doing things that are going to stimulate oxygen or oxygenation.
It's a little different when we are acidic, yet the urine is alkaline. A lot of times, when the urine is alkaline, we talk a lot about the body being in a state of demineralizing where you are releasing minerals through the urine too aggressively. That's the time when you want to focus on weight-bearing exercises. Push it a little bit heavier at the gym if you can. See if you can't create that micro-sculpting because when you do that, your body is going to be needing those micronutrients, those minerals. It's going to use those for repair.
The other thing that I find a lot of times if people have acidic pH in the saliva and alkaline pH in the urine, they are not getting enough hours of sleep. I always say to repair the metabolism, we need at least eight hours of deep sleep. If you are getting less and your pH is telling you that it's struggling because of it, I want you to pay attention to this. If we think about it, when we sleep, we have sympathetic tones in our nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system helps do all of that rebuilding the bone density and the laying down of tissue. There are a lot more activity of that when you are in a deep sleep, it holds on to those minerals.
If you are voiding minerals after you've got up and you are moving, you need them to move around and you are still avoiding a lot of that in the urine pH, it's an indication that you are not getting the repair and the rebuilding that you need. Something fun again is, do a little bit fewer reps and a little bit heavier weights with each repetition. If you are working out and you can still say "Haylie Pomroy" you are doing 14, 15, 16, the weights aren't heavy enough. You should be cursing Haylie Pomroy by about 4 to 8 reps if the weights are heavy enough. I hope that gives you a great visual when you are working out.
We have a little bit of discrepancy here. We've got acidity here, which means the upper part of the GI tract, things aren't digesting well enough. We've got alkalinity here, which means we are not building and restoring enough so we need better sleep. We need to do a little bit more weight-bearing exercise. The other piece that's important when you have this split here is we need to think about digestive aids. You want to think about parsley, cilantro and onions are so important when we've got this divide here to help your body digest things more efficiently. Mushrooms are another good one. Look for places to throw those into every meal. Remember when we have talked on other DVDs about what is the regulator in your body. It's those adrenals. When your body is having a hard time regulating your pH, we want to make sure that we nurture those adrenals.
Doing stress reduction techniques, we have so many of those on our website and everything from alternative, nostril breathing, meditation, essential oils like lavender, all different kinds of journaling, some people find it a significant amount of stress relief. When your pH is split, we want to look at the fact that your body is under stress. It's not taking the opportunity to rebuild and store and those adrenals need extra nurturing. Beans are good for this too. They have a ton of fiber. They've got a lot of micronutrients that help with bone and bone density. Basil and cilantro are great ones, especially what they call Dukan beans or lentils. Those tend to be very nurturing for the adrenals. They are also unique in the fact that the body can utilize that protein efficiently to support the strategic nutrients that help with bone density. This is giving you an indication.
Let's go over the last scene where the body is alkaline, alkaline. This is always a little bit more stressful for me when I see this because the body is trying to do a lot of compensation when this is the case. We are not only having a deep sleep, a lot of stress hormones, but the body is also starting to demineralized a little bit, released minerals throughout the day, as opposed to keeping them for rest and restoration. The body is typically not receiving oxygen as efficiently. I even see individuals, we are in a clinical setting, that are alkaline, alkaline. I don't know if you have ever had your oxygen saturation or your pulse ox tested but these individuals, a lot of times have a low pulse ox so they are not receiving enough as much oxygen. I know I talked about oxygen exercises with acid, acid, but getting oxygen into the blood, we see a lot with alkaline, alkaline being an issue with that, sometimes it can be an indication that someone is anemic. Check-in with your doctor. Make sure that your hematocrit and your hemoglobin are good. Make sure that your ferritin levels, which is the liver secrete so that the body can release oxygen from the heme molecule are good.
She will know exactly what you are talking about. If you are checking your pH, that's your body telling you something. You want to think about increasing your cardio level. If you are doing 20, 17, 45 minutes on the treadmill, think about doing things like intervals. That will tend to stimulate that uptake of nutrients, increase the basal dilation and help switch that pH. The other unique thing is when the body is alkaline, alkaline. We use limes instead of lemons. They tend to help the body utilize the minerals more efficiently so that we don't avoid them.
The other thing like I said, we always want to look at receding gums. Your mouth tells you so much about your health, a coating of the tongue. Make sure that you do things digestively. We have a couple of great recipes like stewed papaya with mint. It's a natural way to stimulate your upper GI digestion. When the pH is alkaline in the saliva, the body's product glands, salivary enzymes are working overtime. People can have stomach acid or heartburn with alkaline, alkaline as much as we can have with acid, acid. It's more on what do I do when these things come off, as opposed to relying totally on the symptom.
The pH testing is a way for you to communicate with your body. For you to say, "Do I need to add an extra day of cardio or get cardio in at all? Do I need to add more weight-bearing exercise? Do I need to migrate more towards lemon in my water or lime in my water? Do I need to get deeper sleep and more sleep?" A lot of times, people forget what important role that plays in a healthy body and healing the metabolism. You have to have time for your body to restore, rebuild and regenerate. Didn’t I tell you a lot about your digestive health?
Sometimes, your upper GI has symptoms like heartburn and acid reflux but your body needs more probiotics. We talk a lot about options, people who like to do cultured vegetables. We have all those kinds of recipes on our website. Those are the prebiotics and probiotics that help your body break down nutrients in the lower part of the GI tract, which can help support or take the stress off of the upper part of the GI tract. If it's split, we want to think a lot about stress and sleep. Your body is telling you, "Your efforts are helping but I could use a little more TLC."
When you test your pH, this is different ways to look at it. If you are acidic, I want to make sure that you are doing a lot of deep breathing and getting oxygen into the lungs. The lungs play an important part in maintaining the pH. If you are alkaline, I want to make sure that you are doing more of their weight-bearing exercise so that body has to suck up those micronutrients and use them for true repair. This is another way to listen to your body. Are you getting enough protein?
This is another piece. If you are working out hard, if you are an athlete, you are doing your two cardio and two weight-bearing, you are working out on Phase 3 and you are not getting enough protein, a lot of times, that can make your pH go off too, especially if you are alkaline. That's an indication that you are not getting enough protein. If you are acidic, it's an indication that you are not getting enough of the vegetables. I hope this helps. This is yet another way for you to communicate with your body and for your body to tell you how to help heal the metabolism once and for all.
